शरीरं सुरुपं तथा वा कलत्रं
यशश्चारू चित्रं धनं मेरुतुल्यम् ।
मनश्चेन्न लग्नं गुरोरंघ्रिपद्मे
ततः किं ततः किं ततः किं ततः किम् ॥१॥

Hindi Translation:- यदि शरीर सुंदर हो, पत्नी भी सुंदर हो और यश चारों दिशाओं में विस्तृत हो अर्थात फैला हुआ हो तथा मेरु पर्वत के समान अपार धन हो, किंतु आप का मन गुरु के चरणकमलों (कमल के समान पैरों) में न लगता हो तो इन सारी उपलब्धियों से क्या लाभ, क्या लाभ, क्या लाभ, क्या लाभ ?

English Translation:- If body is beautiful, wife is also beautiful and fame spreads in all four directions And wealth as immense as Mount Meru, But if your mind is not fixed on the lotus feet of the Guru, then what is the use of all these achievements, what use, what use, what use ?

कलत्रं धनं पुत्रपौत्रादि सर्वं
गृहं बान्धवाः सर्वमेतद्धि जातम् ।
मनश्चेन्न लग्नं गुरोरंघ्रिपद्मे
ततः किं ततः किं ततः किं ततः किम् ॥२॥

Kalatram Dhanam Putra Poutraadi Sarvam,
Gruham Bhaandavaa Sarva Mettadhi Jaatam,
Manasche Na Lagnam Guro Ranghri Padme,

Hindi Translation:- आप के पास पत्नी, धन, पुत्र-पौत्र, घर, भाई-बहन, सभी सगे संबंधी आदि हो किंतु आप का मन गुरु के चरणकमलों में न लगता हो तो इन सब का क्या लाभ, क्या लाभ, क्या लाभ, क्या लाभ ?

English Translation:- You may have wife, wealth, son-grandson, house, brothers and sisters, all relatives etc. But if your mind is not fixed on the lotus feet of the Guru, then what is the use of all these achievements, what use, what use, what use ?

षडंगादिवेदो मुखे शास्त्रविद्या
कवित्वादि गद्यं सुपद्यं करोति ।
मनश्चेन्न लग्नं गुरोरंघ्रिपद्मे
ततः किं ततः किं ततः किं ततः किम् ॥३॥

Shadangaadhi Vedo Mukhe Shastra Vidhyaa,
Kavitva Aadhi Gadhyam, Supadhyam Karoti,
Manasche Na Lagnam Guro Ranghri Padme,
Tatah Kim, Tatah Kim, Tatah Kim, Tatah Kim

Hindi Translation:- वेद एवं षटवेदांगादि शास्त्र (शिक्षा, कल्प, व्याकरण, ज्योतिष, छन्द और निरूक्त – ये छः वेदांग है।) जिन्हें कंठस्थ हों, कविता निर्माण की प्रतिभा हो, गद्य पद्य की रचना करते हों, किंतु आप का मन गुरु के चरणकमलों में न लगता हो तो इन सारी उपलब्धियों से क्या लाभ, क्या लाभ, क्या लाभ, क्या लाभ?

English Translation:- Vedas and six Vedanga Shastras (Shiksha, Kalpa, Vyakaran, Jyotish, Chhanda and Nirukta – these are the six Vedangas.) Those who are memorized, have the talent of making beautiful poems, compose prose poems, But if your mind is not fixed on the lotus feet of the Guru, then what is the use of all these achievements, what use, what use, what use?

विदेशेषु मान्यः स्वदेशेषु धन्यः
सदाचारवृत्तेषु मत्तो न चान्यः ।
मनश्चेन्न लग्नं गुरोरंघ्रिपद्मे
ततः किं ततः किं ततः किं ततः किम् ॥४॥

Vidheseshu Maanyaha, Swadheseshu Dhanyaha,
Sadhaachaara Vrutteshu Matto Na Cha Anyaha,
Manasche Na Lagnam Guro Ranghri Padme,
Tatah Kim, Tatah Kim, Tatah Kim, Tatah Kim

Hindi Translation:- जिन्हें विदेशों में आदर मिलता हो, अपने देश में जिनका नित्य जय-जयकार से स्वागत किया जाता हो और इस विचार के साथ कि ‘धर्म के कार्यों और आचरण में, कोई भी मेरे जैसा नहीं है’ पर उसका मन यदि गुरु के चरणकमलों में न लगता हो तो इन सब का क्या लाभ, क्या लाभ, क्या लाभ, क्या लाभ?

English Translation:- Those who are respected abroad, who are always welcome with cheers in their own country and with the thought that ‘there is no one like me in the works and practice of Dharma’ but if his mind is not fixed on the lotus feet of the Guru, then what is the use of all these achievements, what use, what use, what use?

क्षमामण्डले भूपभूपालवृन्दैः
सदा सेवितं यस्य पादारविन्दम् ।
मनश्चेन्न लग्नं गुरोरंघ्रिपद्मे
ततः किं ततः किं ततः किं ततः किम् ॥५॥

Kshamaa Mandale Bhupa Bhupaala Vrindihi,
Sada Sevitam Yasya Paadaaravindam,
Manasche Na Lagnam Guro Ranghri Padme,

Hindi Translation:- जिनका महानता और विद्वता के परिणाम स्वरूप पृथ्वीमण्डल (सारे जगत) के सम्राटों और राजाओं के यजमानों द्वारा चरण कमलों की निरंतर (भक्ति के साथ) सेवा करते हों पर यदि उसका मन गुरु के चरणकमलों में न लगता हो तो इन सब का क्या लाभ, क्या लाभ, क्या लाभ, क्या लाभ ?

English Translation:- Whose lotus feet are constantly served (with devotion) by the hosts of emperors and kings of the earth as a result of their greatness and scholarship. but if his mind is not fixed on the lotus feet of the Guru, then what is the use of all these achievements, what use, what use, what use?

यशो मे गतं दिक्षु दानप्रतापात्
जगद्वस्तु सर्वं करे सत्प्रसादात् ।
मनश्चेन्न लग्नं गुरोरंघ्रिपद्मे
ततः किं ततः किं ततः किं ततः किम् ॥६॥

Jagadvastu Sarvam Kare Yatprasaadaath

Hindi Translation:- जिनका दान, प्रताप के कार्यों एवं कौशल का यश चारों दिशाओं में व्याप्त है, इन गुणों के पुरस्कार के रूप में सभी सांसारिक संपत्ति मेरी पहुंच के भीतर हैं, किंतु उनका मन गुरु के चरणकमलों में न लगता हो तो इन सब का क्या लाभ, क्या लाभ, क्या लाभ, क्या लाभ?

English Translation:- Whose charity, fame of Pratap’s works and skill is spread in all the four directions, all worldly possessions are within my reach as a reward for these qualities, but if his mind is not fixed on the lotus feet of the Guru, then what is the use of all these achievements, what use, what use, what use?

न भोगे न योगे न वा वाजिराजौ
न कान्तासुखे नैव वित्तेषु चित्तम् ।
मनश्चेन्न लग्नं गुरोरंघ्रिपद्मे
ततः किं ततः किं ततः किं ततः किम् ॥७॥

Na Bhoge, Na Yoghe, Na Vaa Vaajiraajaa,
Na Kaantaa Mukhe Naiva Vitteshu Chittam,
Manasche Na Lagnam Guro Ranghri Padme,
Tatah Kim, Tatah Kim, Tatah Kim, Tatah Kim

Hindi Translation:- जिनका मन न भोग, न योग, न अश्व, राज्य, न तो स्त्री के मनमोहक चेहरे से और न पृथ्वी की समस्त धन, संपत्ति से कभी विचलित न हुआ हो पर यदि उनका मन गुरु के चरणकमलों में न लगता हो तो इन सब का क्या लाभ, क्या लाभ, क्या लाभ, क्या लाभ ?

English Translation:- Whose mind has never been distracted by enjoyment, yoga, horses, kingdom, the attractive face of a woman, nor all the wealth and possessions of the earth, but if his mind is not fixed on the lotus feet of the Guru, then what is the use of all these achievements, what use, what use, what use?

अरण्ये न वा स्वस्य गेहे न कार्ये
न देहे मनो वर्तते मे त्वनर्घ्ये ।
मनश्चेन्न लग्नं गुरोरंघ्रिपद्मे
ततः किं ततः किं ततः किं ततः किम् ॥८॥

Aranye Na Vaa Svasya Gehe Na Kaarye
Na Dehe Mano Vartate Me Tvanargye
Manasche Na Lagnam Guro Ranghri Padme,
Tatah Kim, Tatah Kim, Tatah Kim, Tatah Kim

Hindi Translation:- जिनका वन या अपने घर में नहीं, अपने काम में नहीं, शरीर में नहीं, न ही अमूल्य चीजों में मन रहता है, पर यदि उनका मन गुरु के चरणकमलों में न लगता हो तो इन सब का क्या लाभ, क्या लाभ, क्या लाभ, क्या लाभ ?

English Translation:- Whose mind is not in the forest or in his home, not in his work, not in the body, nor in the priceless things, but if his mind is not fixed on the lotus feet of the Guru, then what is the use of all these achievements, what use, what use, what use?

गुरोरष्टकं यः पठेत्पुण्यदेही
यतिर्भूपतिर्ब्रह्मचारी च गेही ।
लभेत् वांछितार्थ पदं ब्रह्मसंज्ञं
गुरोरुक्तवाक्ये मनो यस्य लग्नम् ॥

Gurorashtakam Yah Patetu PunyaDehee
Yatir Bhupatir Bhrahmachaari Cha Gehi
Labhet Vaancitaartha Padam Brahma Sanjnam
Guro Ruktavakye mano yasya Lagnam

Hindi Translation:- जो तपस्वी, राजा, ब्रह्मचारी एवं गृहस्थ इस गुरु-अष्टक का पठन-पाठन करता है और जिसका मन गुरु के वचनों में आसक्त है, वह पुण्यशाली शरीरधारी अपने इच्छितार्थ एवं ब्रह्मपद इन दोनों को सम्प्राप्त कर लेता है यह निश्चित है।

English Translation:- The ascetic, the king, the celibate and the householder, who reads and recites this Guru-Ashtak and whose mind is engrossed in the words of the Guru, that person with a virtuous body attains both his desire and the Brahmapad.
